John, valid points and thanks for sharing your insights on personal branding. Personal brands are transferable, meaning that if you're well known in your industry, you can move around, which is great for your career, but can hurt your company. It's the only form of career protection that exists today. The only way for a person to stay at a company long-term is if their values, mission and vision are identical.

[...] Personal Branding: Not a New Concept (John Morrison) I know Rebecca’s going to be mad at me, because she was probably going to post these tomorrow. But they were posted today, so – ha! John, Daniel and Rebecca were apparently having a discussion about personal branding recently, and these two posts came out of it. Makes for really interesting reading. Does personal branding negatively or positively affect agencies? [...]

Likewise. I think the idea of personal branding has been over used. I remember when it "used" to be called reputation management. But, perhaps I'm dating myself. Like Jenn said, people have been saying negative (and positive) things as long as there have been words and mouths to use them. Social media (why the hell is still called social media, is beyond me, but I digress) is just another platform, broadcaster if you will, to project what folks think. At the end of the day, a personal brand/reputation has to be backed up by actions and experiences that justify the brand.

Agreed! Social media and the practice of it is nothing new. It's been around for a long time, we just now have a name for it. Of course most people don't realize this so when they hear 'personal brand' or 'social media' they get scared, or worried that people will start saying negative things about them/their company. People have been saying negative things for years, whether it was at a tupperware party or on Twitter. Now we have the ability to hear what's being said, which offers the opportunity to make the necessary changes.

I could go on and on, but I won't. Excellent post!

Fuck you getting a grave. You get a massive Tesla coil. Josh and I will build it. It will be forty feet tall, and all of the metal will have gold filigree spelling out "Fuck Thomas Edison...seriously." It will be epic. And when the weeping women come to mourn you, ripping their hair and rending their flesh, I will nod wisely and say, "Children, The Great One is not here. If you truly love him, you will go find Dan, for he is the one that fucked up the eulogy and is getting his ass haunted for the rest of time. Now go, I have some soldering to do." And it will be good.

So say we all.

(ps you're awesomesauce(tm))

Elephant aside, I'm a fan of this post. This comes from someone who had their mom write "You're an overstatement!" on her graduation cake. I couldn't tell you why, but I suppose I wanted people to feel confused and then laugh as if they were in on some sort of joke that they didn't fully understand.

Anyway, I fully support your decision to include Sega in your eulogy. And if I'm still alive, I will visit that tombstone so I can take a photo and post it to Twitter, Flitter or whatever version we have in the future.

[...] I’m very fortunate to have made some amazing friends who, thankfully, appreciate my antagonistic behavior and sense of humor. In the event of my death I’ve made two of them, Dan and Christine, responsible for certain things. Dan, I’ve asked to eulogize me but only if he leads off with the following: “John was not a great man, he wasn’t even a good man, but he did have a really sweet setup for his Sega Dreamcast“ [...]

John, It looks fine with a rich feel. You can give me some tips on how to access certain themes or whatever they're called. Overall, it's very inviting and accessible. Nice work. Let me know when and where you will be on stage and let's hear more about your photo class. Jack

love mine. but the wifi isn't global. liars. it's global in the americanized sense of "it works in some places that aren't in the u.s." bastards. still, i think it's more of the portability of it. i still love books and i want to own them but when you're bumming around south east asia you really can't beat something light that reads like paper and can carry whatever you want to read without taking up any room.
plus the highlight and footnote functions are so cool that i've actually caught myself reading a real-life book and trying to click the little joystick thingy. ::shrug:: i'm suggestible.
